HHS unveils national plan to boost response for missing autistic individuals

On Friday, U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. launched the National Autism Missing and Endangered Person Alert Initiative, a federal effort designed to strengthen the nation’s ability to locate and protect autistic individuals who go missing.

Coordinated response across agencies

The initiative calls for tighter coordination among emergency‑management agencies, law‑enforcement officers, first‑responders, and community partners. By creating a unified alert system, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) hopes to reduce the time it takes to locate missing autistic children and adults, a group that faces higher risks of wandering and accidental drowning.

Best‑practice framework

HHS will develop a national framework of best practices that addresses the leading causes of preventable injury and death among autistic individuals. The framework will include guidance on how to respond when a person with autism wanders, how to conduct safe searches, and how to educate families about risk‑reduction strategies.

Data and recent recommendations

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, autism affects roughly one in 31 children in the United States. In an interagency autism committee meeting on April 28, officials approved several recommendations, such as enhanced screening for co‑occurring medical conditions and the creation of federal guidance specifically focused on wandering and elopement.

Broader HHS actions

Alongside the alert initiative, HHS announced a broader set of coordinated actions intended to improve safety, health care, and services for autistic individuals throughout their lives. These actions will address education, employment, and long‑term health needs, reflecting a comprehensive approach to supporting the autism community.

What families can expect

Families of autistic children can anticipate clearer protocols for reporting missing persons, faster mobilization of local resources, and access to educational materials that outline steps to prevent wandering. The initiative also emphasizes partnerships with local nonprofits and advocacy groups that already work closely with families on the ground.

While the program is federal in scope, its success will depend on collaboration with state and local agencies. HHS officials indicated that they will work with state health departments and local law‑enforcement to adapt the national guidelines to regional needs.

The launch marks a significant federal commitment to a vulnerable population that has historically faced gaps in emergency response. By aligning resources and establishing consistent practices, the government aims to reduce tragic outcomes and give families greater peace of mind.
