The South Philadelphia Sports Complex buzzed with patriotism and community spirit this weekend as it hosted the 71st Hero Thrill Show, a fundraiser honoring the families of police officers, firefighters and emergency personnel. Marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the event highlighted the enduring gratitude of a city that stands behind its first‑responders.
Show Highlights
Attendees enjoyed a parade of police motorcycles, fire‑engine tours, K‑9 demonstrations, mounted patrol units, boardwalk‑style food and classic carnival games. “You cannot get all of these groups in one place at one time and see this kind of event. It’s the only event of its kind,” said event coordinator Lauren Goffredo.
Officer Kristin Gondek made history as the first woman on the Philadelphia Highway Patrol Motorcycle Drill Team. “The first female, that’s what they say, I’m making history,” Gondek said, adding that the experience was “way cooler” than she imagined.
Family Focus
Families of all ages gathered to watch the displays and share in the camaraderie. “We see all the police officers here and the commissioners all the way over there. It’s the best time ever,” said Aria Galberth, a local resident.
Beyond the excitement, the Hero Thrill Show serves a vital purpose: every dollar raised goes directly toward college tuition for children of Philadelphia police and fire personnel who have died in the line of duty. The Cassidy family, whose son Chuck—a Philadelphia police officer—was killed in 2007, testified to the impact of the fundraiser. “When something like this happens, your first thought is, how am I going to put my kids through school, through college. It’s awful,” said Judy Cassidy. “But when you have people who are willing to do something like this, it’s huge.” All three of the Cassidy children have benefited from the program.
Long‑Term Impact
Since its inception in 2006, the Hero Thrill Show has helped more than 50 children attend college, providing a pathway to higher education that might otherwise be out of reach for families who have sacrificed so much for public safety.
The event underscores the deep ties between Philadelphia’s first‑responders and the communities they protect. By celebrating bravery, honoring sacrifice, and investing in the next generation, the Hero Thrill Show embodies the city’s commitment to family, faith, and individual liberty.
Looking Ahead
Organizers plan to expand the fundraiser’s reach in future years, aiming to support even more families while preserving the tradition of community togetherness that makes the Hero Thrill Show a beloved annual gathering.
