Spring Hill, Fla. – In response to a report from a 14‑year‑old student who encountered a suspicious man near Explorer K‑8 School on Tuesday morning, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office has assigned additional deputies to patrol the neighborhoods surrounding the school.
Incident details
The student said she was walking to school along Portillo Road between 7:15 a.m. and 8 a.m. when she saw a man standing beside a pickup truck parked at a nearby construction site. She described the man as appearing to engage in an indecent act and smiling in her direction. The student crossed the road quickly to avoid him. The man entered the truck and drove away, disappearing from view.
Law‑enforcement response
Deputies canvassed the area later that morning, and detectives are actively working to identify the individual. The sheriff’s office described the suspect’s vehicle as a dark‑colored, four‑door pickup truck—possibly blue—with what appeared to be electrical equipment stored in the bed. The driver was wearing tan or khaki pants.
To enhance safety for students and families, the sheriff’s office has deployed extra patrol units to monitor school commute routes during both morning drop‑off and afternoon dismissal. Officers will maintain a visible presence on streets surrounding Explorer K‑8 and other nearby schools.
Community safety reminders
Authorities are urging parents and guardians to talk with their children about personal safety, to stay alert during daily commutes, and to report any unfamiliar or uncomfortable encounters to a trusted adult or law‑enforcement officer immediately.
