Heart of Alabama Food Bank launches Breakfast Stack Challenge for Montgomery groups

Montgomery, Ala. – The Heart of Alabama Food Bank announced a new community‑wide effort to fight hunger: the “Breakfast Stack Challenge.” The nonprofit is calling on local businesses, schools, churches and civic groups to gather breakfast‑type foods and stack their donations for a friendly competition.

How the challenge works

Participating groups will assemble a tower of donated breakfast items—cereal, oatmeal, pancake mix, fruit, juice, and other morning staples. Each stack will be photographed and submitted for judging. Winners will receive trophies and a gift‑card from Piggly Wiggly Food For Less, providing additional resources for the group’s own charitable work.

Why the focus on breakfast

According to John Lucas, CEO of the Heart of Alabama Food Bank, “One of the reasons we do this is to give the community an opportunity to participate, because that is really what it takes to take care of hunger in our community.” He noted that the food bank serves 35 of Alabama’s 67 counties, and that roughly one‑in‑five adults and one‑in‑four children in the service area lack reliable access to food.

Getting involved

Groups can register for the challenge through an online form that includes instructions, rules, and a space to upload a photo of their breakfast stack. Registration is open now and will close on September 13. After the deadline, voting on the best stacks will run through September 27, allowing the public to help decide the winners.

Action 8 News has already built its own stack using employee donations, demonstrating how easy it can be for any organization to contribute. The station encourages other groups to follow suit, emphasizing that the event is open to anyone willing to help feed Montgomery’s families.

Impact on the community

The challenge aligns with the food bank’s broader mission to reduce food insecurity across central Alabama. By turning food collection into a fun, competitive event, the organization hopes to engage more volunteers and increase the volume of nutritious breakfast items that reach those in need.

Local leaders have praised the initiative as a practical way to rally the community around a shared cause. “When we work together, we can make a real difference for our neighbors,” said a Montgomery city council member who plans to enter a stack on behalf of the council’s community outreach program.

What’s next

After the voting period ends, the food bank will announce the winning groups and distribute the trophies and gift cards. All collected breakfast foods will be delivered to the food bank’s distribution centers, where they will be packaged and sent to families throughout the region.
