A healthy baby was anonymously delivered to a baby box at the Danville Fire Department in central Kentucky, marking a significant moment nearly two years after the box was installed.
Safe Haven Baby Box Program
The Safe Haven Baby Box program, founded by Monica Kelsey, aims to provide a safe and anonymous way for mothers to surrender their newborns. The program has successfully helped 83 infants since 2017.
The baby box at the Danville Fire Department was installed in September 2023 and is one of 21 locations in Kentucky. The box is climate-controlled with an automatic lock mechanism and alerts firefighters and 911 dispatch when a baby is placed inside.
Fire Chief Mike McCurdy expressed gratitude that the mother trusted the program to keep her baby safe. “As firefighters, we’re here to help people on their worst days. The fact that a mother trusted us with her newborn is something our department will never forget,” he said.
