Hazen senior Angelica Nguyen finished third at the state heptathlon, held at Arlington High School from June 6-7. Nguyen had set a goal of placing top five, but her third-place finish exceeded her expectations.
Overcoming Disappointment
Nguyen’s path to the state heptathlon was not without its challenges. She had failed to make the state tournament after a disappointing performance at the District 2 4A meet. However, she used this setback as motivation to focus on her heptathlon training.
Nguyen credited her coaches and teammates for their support, which helped her stay energized and motivated throughout the competition. She set personal records in several events, including the 100 meter hurdles, high jump, and 200 meter dash.
A Strong Finish
On the second day of the competition, Nguyen set another personal record in the javelin, throwing it 105 feet. She then jumped 16’10” in the long jump, cementing her position in the top three. To secure her third-place finish, Nguyen needed to run the 800 meter dash in under 2:30, which she accomplished with a time of 2:28.
Nguyen’s point total puts her second all-time in Hazen High School history. She expressed gratitude for her coaches, who helped her not only improve her athletic performance but also develop mentally.
