GiGi Hayes, a lawyer and professor at Miles College, won the Democratic runoff for state House District 52 with 74.89% of the vote. Hayes defeated community organizer LaTonya Millhouse in the runoff election.
Local Support
Hayes was celebrated by a crowd of friends, family, city officials, and mentees at The Alcove Birmingham. Local officials, including District 60 primary winner Alicia Scott Lumpkin and District 55 primary winner Travis Hendrix, showed their support for Hayes.
Hayes stated that she decided to run for the House when she felt it would be disobedient to do otherwise, citing her desire to make a difference for her grandchildren and the community. Hayes expressed her excitement and gratitude, saying, ‘God is so good. I told y’all day one, this ain’t about a donkey. This ain’t about an elephant. This is about the Lamb of God.’
Millhouse conceded the race in a statement on Facebook, expressing gratitude to her supporters and family. Hayes’ win in the runoff is tantamount to a victory in November, as no Republican is running for the office.
