National media outlet Fox News Digital reported on Friday that popular Twitch streamer Hasan Piker has begun to moderate his on‑air commentary after facing significant criticism from Democratic officials and a broader public backlash.
Backlash over recent remarks
Piker, who previously campaigned with Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El‑Sayed, discussed the controversy with “Pod Save America” co‑host Jon Lovett. He referenced an Axios interview in which he described America as “pound for pound” worse than al‑Qaeda on terrorism, a comment that drew sharp rebuke from Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin.
Martin called Piker’s statements “absolutely disgusting and deplorable,” adding that the streamer does not represent the Democratic Party or the views of most of its candidates and elected officials.
Piker’s response
In the interview, Piker argued that many of his comments have been taken “out of context” or excerpted from longer statements. He said he is now more carefully considering what he says, noting, “I’ve definitely dialed down my commentary with that in mind for sure.” He did not specify which opinions he has softened.
Piker also suggested that the backlash is partly driven by Republicans lacking a strong midterm message, stating, “Just because it’s their most successful narrative doesn’t mean that it’s going to be successful in winning elections for them.” He added that both Republicans and some liberals dislike him, but emphasized that holding a Twitch streamer to a higher standard than the president is an “insane phenomenon” concocted by out‑of‑touch mainstream outlets.
Political fallout
El‑Sayed, who won the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat, has repeatedly tried to distance himself from Piker, referring to the streamer as a “streamer from California” with no relevance to the race.
Other Democratic figures have also condemned Piker for remarks that suggested Jewish Americans were bringing violence upon themselves because of their support for Israel. The Democratic National Committee chair reiterated that Piker’s comments do not reflect the party’s values.
