Harvard University agrees to $53 million settlement over mishandled donated bodies

Boston – Harvard University has reached a $53 million settlement with families who allege the medical school mishandled the bodies of loved ones donated for research and education. The agreement was preliminarily approved Tuesday by a state court judge in Boston, ending a series of lawsuits that followed the 2023 arrest of former morgue manager Cedric Lodge.

Background of the case

Cedric Lodge worked in Harvard Medical School’s morgue for nearly thirty years. In December 2025 a federal judge sentenced him to eight years in prison after prosecutors proved he stole and sold organs, heads, faces, brains, skin and hands from donated cadavers. Lodge transported the stolen parts from the Boston morgue to his home in Goffstown, New Hampshire, where he and his wife sold them on the black market.

Families’ claims

Dozens of relatives of donors filed lawsuits accusing Harvard of negligence, asserting the university turned a blind eye to Lodge’s misconduct for years. An initial dismissal was overturned in October by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, which found the plaintiffs had sufficient claims that Harvard failed to act in good faith and that the “horrific and undignified treatment” of the bodies continued for years.

University response

Harvard’s dean of the faculty of medicine, George Daley, and dean of medical education, Bernard Chang, issued a statement describing Lodge’s conduct as “despicable, abhorrent, and a flagrant betrayal of our values as a medical community.” The settlement includes monetary compensation and a pledge by Harvard Medical School to hold a live webinar for families, confirming that Lodge’s criminal acts were morally reprehensible.

Future safeguards

Beginning in the 2027‑2028 academic year, Harvard Medical School will establish an annual scholarship for medical students in honor of all anatomical donors. John Morgan of Morgan & Morgan, which represented the families, said the resolution aims to ensure that no other family experiences a similar tragedy.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about the stewardship of donated bodies and the ethical responsibilities of medical institutions. While the settlement resolves the current lawsuits, it also underscores the need for rigorous oversight to protect donors’ dignity and uphold the trust placed in academic medical centers.
