Harlem’s African American Day Parade Returns for 57th Anniversary with Business‑Focused Theme

The African American Day Parade rolls through Harlem this Sunday, marking its 57th year of honoring Black culture, heritage, and excellence. The celebration begins at 12:30 p.m. on Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard, stretching from 111th to 137th streets, and will be streamed live on ABC 7 New York for anyone who cannot attend in person.

History and purpose

Founded in 1968 by Afro‑American Day and the United Federation of Black Community Organizations, the parade was created to provide a positive, community‑driven showcase of Black achievements and to honor the ancestors who paved the way. The first event took place on September 21, 1969, under the banner “Africa’s Gift to America.” Since then, the parade has been held every third Sunday in September, growing into one of the city’s most beloved cultural traditions.

This year’s focus

The 2026 theme, “Good Businesses Sustain Our Future,” underscores the vital role that Black‑owned enterprises play in strengthening neighborhoods and creating lasting economic opportunity. Organizers hope the message will inspire both established firms and emerging entrepreneurs to invest in the community’s long‑term prosperity.

Grand marshals

Four distinguished leaders will serve as grand marshals, embodying the parade’s business‑centric theme:

  • J. Alexander Martin – entrepreneur and co‑founder of the iconic lifestyle brand FUBU.
  • Chef Charles Gabriel – celebrated culinary talent known for showcasing Black flavors on a national stage.
  • Cheryl McKissack Daniel – civil engineer and businesswoman whose firm has delivered major infrastructure projects across the country.
  • Michael Preston – entrepreneur and community leader dedicated to mentoring the next generation of Black business owners.

Each marshal will ride a decorated float, sharing brief remarks about the importance of supporting local businesses and preserving cultural heritage.

Community involvement

Local schools, churches, and civic groups are joining the festivities with music, dance performances, and food vendors lining the boulevard. The parade provides a family‑friendly environment where parents can teach children about the rich history of Black contributions to American society while enjoying live entertainment.

How to watch

For residents who prefer to stay home, the entire parade will be streamed live on the ABC 7 New York website and its mobile app. The broadcast will feature commentary from community leaders, behind‑the‑scenes interviews with the grand marshals, and a spotlight on the businesses highlighted by the theme.

Looking ahead

Organizers say the parade’s continued growth reflects a broader desire for positive representation of Black communities in New York City. By emphasizing sustainable business practices, the event aims to spark dialogue about economic empowerment that aligns with family values and the principles of personal liberty cherished by the community.

Whether you attend in person or tune in online, the African American Day Parade offers a vibrant reminder of Harlem’s enduring spirit and the collective commitment to a brighter, more prosperous future for all.
