Harlan Hawks dominate Marshall Rams in three-set volleyball sweep

The Harlan Hawks delivered a decisive victory on Saturday night at Northside Sports Gym, sweeping the Marshall Rams in straight sets to improve their early‑season record. The win highlighted the team’s depth and the leadership of head coach Monica Gonzales, who reminded her players that “to be the best, you have to play the best” and that pressure is a privilege they embrace from the start.

First set: Hawks seize early momentum

Marshall opened the match by sending the ball over the net, but Harlan quickly responded. Setter Aliyana Serbones delivered a precise set to outside hitter Nailah Randle, who drove the ball down for a kill, putting Harlan ahead 11‑9. The Rams fought back, with Marieme Fall attempting a kill that was blocked by Harlan’s defense. Marshall kept the rally alive when Arianna Wright set up Tatiana Laboy, who finished the point with a kill, but Harlan maintained the edge and closed the set.

Second set: Defensive resilience pays off

The Rams tried to rally in the second set, extending rallies and testing Harlan’s blocking scheme. However, the Hawks’ defensive coordination, anchored by Serbones’ quick sets and Randle’s aggressive hitting, kept the Rams at bay. Harlan’s sideout efficiency and disciplined serve receive allowed them to pull away, securing the set and putting the match out of reach for Marshall.

Third set: Closing out the sweep

With the championship on the line, Harlan maintained composure. Randle continued to dominate at the net, while the team’s libero and defensive specialists executed crucial digs and blocks. The Hawks closed the third set without letting the Rams mount a comeback, completing a clean three‑set sweep.

Coach Gonzales on the win

“To be the best, you have to play the best,” Coach Monica Gonzales said after the match. “I think pressure is a privilege, and we talk about that from the beginning.” Her emphasis on mental toughness and preparation has become a hallmark of the Hawks’ program.

Randle looks ahead

Randle, an outside hitter for Harlan and an LSU commit, praised the team’s progress. “Continuing that hard work. Accomplish the goals we set for our team,” she said, noting that the squad has improved steadily since the season’s start.

Upcoming schedule

The Hawks will host Taft on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 6 p.m., giving fans another opportunity to see the team build on its momentum. The matchup promises to be a test of Harlan’s consistency as they aim to maintain their winning ways in the early part of the season.

Local supporters praised the team’s performance, highlighting the importance of high‑school athletics in fostering community spirit and providing positive role models for younger students. The victory adds to Harlan’s growing reputation as a competitive force in Texas high‑school volleyball.
