A United Nations official has stated that the Palestinian militant group Hamas is obstructing aid distribution in the Gaza Strip, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn enclave.
Hamas Disrupts Humanitarian Efforts
According to the U.N.’s humanitarian coordinator for the Palestinian territories, armed men entered a food distribution point in northern Gaza and assaulted two truck drivers in a World Food Program warehouse. This incident is part of a larger pattern of intimidation, violence, and obstruction of humanitarian operations.
The U.N. Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Ramiz Alakbarov, condemned these actions, stating that they are placing humanitarian workers at risk and disrupting the delivery of life-saving assistance. Hamas has denied the allegations, claiming that the police forces involved were conducting a law enforcement operation to prevent the smuggling of contraband.
The Gaza Strip has been devastated by the ongoing conflict, with much of the territory remaining in ruins over two years after the war was triggered by Hamas’s attack on Israel. Israeli troops remain in control of more than 60% of the territory, and ceasefire talks have been faltering for months.
