On Oct. 15, Habitat for Humanity of Racine & Kenosha Counties hosted its annual Building Hope Gala at the Covenant at Murray Mansion in Racine. The event attracted over 200 guests, including volunteers, business leaders, and Habitat homeowners, all united around the goal of safe, affordable homeownership for families across the two‑county region.
Homeowner stories underscore lasting benefits
The evening’s centerpiece was a panel of current and future Habitat homeowners. Panelists shared how owning a home through Habitat’s model provided stability, security, and long‑term financial opportunity—especially as rising costs and a tight housing market threaten affordable options for many families.
“Building Hope was a true celebration of what this community can do together,” said Grant Buenger, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Racine & Kenosha Counties. “We’re grateful to Town Bank/Wintrust for its leadership as presenting sponsor and to every guest, sponsor and volunteer who made the night a success. Their support helps more families take the next step toward a safe, affordable place to call home.”
Town Bank/Wintrust backs the mission
Tom Mahoney, market president for Wintrust Commercial Banking at State Bank of the Lakes in Kenosha, represented Town Bank as presenting sponsor. “We were proud to support Habitat’s mission and to celebrate the families and partners building stronger neighborhoods across our region,” Mahoney said.
Founded in 1988 as an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, the organization builds homes alongside low‑ to moderate‑income families, who contribute labor and later purchase the homes with affordable mortgages. Mortgage payments flow into a Fund for Humanity that finances future builds, creating a self‑sustaining cycle of community investment.
Local business involvement strengthens impact
Town Bank, a Wintrust Community Bank headquartered in Delafield, has grown to more than 25 branches across southeastern Wisconsin since its 1998 founding. Its sponsorship of the Building Hope Gala reflects an ongoing commitment to affordable housing efforts throughout the region.
Habitat also operates the Habitat ReStore at 1101 Grove Ave. in Racine, where donated building materials and home goods are sold to the public, generating additional revenue for homebuilding projects.
