Gulf Coast braces for Category 3 Hurricane Isaias as evacuations ramp up

Residents along the Gulf Coast are racing to complete preparations as Hurricane Isaias intensifies into a Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 120 mph (193 kph). The National Hurricane Center forecasts landfall late Friday somewhere between Mobile Bay, Alabama and Choctawhatchee Bay, Florida, bringing dangerous storm surge, high winds, flash flooding and the potential for tornadoes.

State and local officials activate emergency plans

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey ordered the immediate evacuation of non‑residents from Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Dauphin Island. Traffic snarls were captured on social‑media videos showing highways clogged as residents fled the barrier island. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for dozens of counties and announced that about 5,000 National Guard troops would be mobilized by Friday.

Local leaders are urging citizens to board up windows, stack sandbags and heed voluntary evacuation notices, especially on Dauphin Island’s western side, which is most vulnerable to surge. Mayor Jeff Collier of the island cautioned that while he does not expect catastrophic damage, the storm’s intensity can change quickly and residents must be prepared for the worst.

Storm surge and rainfall threats

The hurricane center predicts storm surge heights of 5 to 7 feet (1.5 to 2 meters) along the immediate coastline, with large, dangerous waves accompanying the surge. Rainfall could total up to 15 inches (38 cm) in coastal areas, increasing the risk of flash flooding and spawning tornadoes from Alabama through the Florida Panhandle into southwestern Georgia.

Long‑duration power outages are also expected, according to the National Weather Service, underscoring the need for families to have emergency supplies and backup power sources.

Impact on energy production and markets

In anticipation of the storm, offshore oil and gas producers in the Gulf have shut down a significant share of production, temporarily removing about 1.3 million barrels per day from the market—roughly 63% of regional output. The Marine Minerals Administration reported that 121 of the Gulf’s 371 manned oil platforms have been evacuated.

Jim Burkhard, global head of crude oil market research for S&P Global Energy, noted that while the production cuts will affect markets, previous Gulf hurricanes have caused larger disruptions. He warned that Isaias’s proximity to refineries could pose additional concerns for fuel supplies.

Transportation and public safety measures

Pensacola International Airport will close to commercial flights Friday morning. Mayor D.C. Reeves urged residents to check on older adults and neighbors who may need assistance during the storm.

National Guard soldiers have been deployed across the affected states to assist with evacuations, traffic control and post‑storm recovery efforts. Their presence reflects the administration’s commitment to protecting families and preserving community stability during natural disasters.

Historical context and outlook

Isaias is the first hurricane of the Atlantic season and formed just one day short of tying a 121‑year‑old record for the latest‑forming hurricane in the region, a record set in 1905. While the season has been unusually quiet due to a strong El Niño, forecasters note that the Pacific has seen above‑average activity, including Hurricane Simon.

Past Gulf‑coast hurricanes such as Camille (1969), Katrina (2005) and Michael (2018) serve as stark reminders of the devastation possible when major storms make landfall. Officials stress that early preparation and swift evacuation can save lives and reduce property loss.

As Isaias moves inland, it is expected to weaken rapidly, downgrading to a tropical storm by Saturday afternoon. Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels, follow evacuation orders, and prioritize the safety of their families.
