Guadalupe Opens Las Mujeres Skate Park Early to Serve Community Before El Niño

Guadalupe, Calif. – City leaders officially opened Las Mujeres Park on Friday, giving residents immediate access to a brand‑new skate park, playground, basketball court and fitness area. The early opening comes as the community prepares for the winter months expected to be affected by an El Niño weather pattern.

Prop 68 funding and community focus

The park is the latest project financed through California’s Proposition 68, a statewide initiative that allocates money from the California Natural Resources Agency to protect, restore and enhance local cultural and natural resources. City administrator David Trujillo said the park reflects a commitment to strengthen neighborhood ties and provide safe, family‑friendly recreation in the heart of Guadalupe.

Features and phased completion

Las Mujeres Park includes a concrete skate‑boarding area, checker‑board tables for gatherings, a modern playground for children, a full‑size basketball court and a set of outdoor exercise equipment. While most amenities are ready for public use, some fencing will remain for a few more months while the surrounding grass establishes a stable root system.

Honoring local women and mothers

The name “Las Mujeres” honors the women and mothers who have long been the backbone of Guadalupe’s community life. City officials highlighted the symbolic importance of the name during the ribbon‑cutting ceremony, noting that the park aims to provide a safe space where families can gather, children can play, and neighbors can connect across the city’s east‑west divide.

Mayor and council support

Mayor and council members praised the project as a tangible example of responsible stewardship of state funds and a boost to local quality of life. They emphasized that opening the park ahead of the anticipated El Niño season allows residents to enjoy the facilities before any potential weather‑related disruptions.

Looking ahead

City officials plan to monitor the park’s usage and gather community feedback to guide future enhancements. Trujillo expressed confidence that Las Mujeres will become a central gathering place, fostering stronger bonds among Guadalupe’s diverse neighborhoods.

Residents are encouraged to visit the park during daylight hours and to respect the remaining fenced areas until the landscaping is fully established.
