Guadalupe County Animal Services has stopped accepting stray animals due to a parvovirus outbreak that has led to the euthanasia of at least 45 dogs. The Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office reported that 47 dogs were euthanized over a three-week span, with the first two being euthanized for reasons unrelated to the outbreak.

The shelter, which has 33 kennels, does not have a dedicated space for animals to be placed in quarantine, contributing to the spread of the virus. The Guadalupe County Humane Society has also dealt with a recent parvovirus outbreak, resulting in the euthanasia of dogs.
According to the National Institutes of Health, parvovirus can cause hemorrhagic enteritis and myocarditis in dogs, with mortality rates of approximately 10% among adult dogs and 91% in puppies.
