GSK to invest up to $750 million in new cancer‑targeting therapy

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) disclosed on Tuesday a major investment to strengthen its cancer portfolio. The London‑listed pharmaceutical giant will pay up to $750 million for the worldwide rights to a trispecific T‑cell engager (TCE) being developed by China‑based biotechnology firm Chimagen Biosciences.

What the drug does

The trispecific TCE is an engineered protein that simultaneously brings a patient’s T‑cells into close contact with tumor cells while blocking immune‑checkpoint pathways. This dual action is designed to boost the body’s natural ability to kill cancer cells and to reduce off‑target side effects, a promising approach for treating hard‑to‑treat blood cancers such as multiple myeloma.

Deal structure and milestones

GSK will provide an upfront payment to secure full global rights to the program. In addition, Chimagen will be eligible for further development and commercial milestone payments tied to the drug’s progress through clinical trials and eventual market launch.

Timeline for development

The company plans to move the candidate into Phase 1 clinical testing in 2027, targeting patients with multiple myeloma. If the early‑stage trials confirm safety and efficacy, GSK intends to advance the therapy through later‑stage studies and ultimately bring it to market.

Strategic context

The agreement follows a series of high‑profile oncology moves by GSK’s new chief executive, Luke Miels. Since taking the helm, Miels has pledged to expand the firm’s cancer franchise ahead of the inevitable loss of patent protection on its best‑selling HIV medicines. Earlier this year, GSK completed a $10.6 billion acquisition of lung‑cancer specialist Nuvalent, its largest purchase in more than a decade. In 2024, the company also secured rights to another experimental drug from Chimagen in a deal valued at up to $850 million.

Regulatory milestones

GSK’s recent regulatory success includes the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s October 2025 approval of its blood‑cancer drug Blenrep in a combination regimen, allowing the product to return to the market after a three‑year withdrawal.

Implications for patients and the industry

By investing in cutting‑edge immunotherapy, GSK aims to deliver new treatment options to patients battling multiple myeloma and other blood cancers. The deal also underscores the growing collaboration between Western pharmaceutical leaders and innovative biotech firms in China, a trend that could accelerate the development of life‑saving medicines worldwide.

Industry analysts view the transaction as a vote of confidence in the promise of T‑cell‑engaging technologies, which are seen as a next‑generation approach to cancer care. If successful, the therapy could add to the growing arsenal of targeted treatments that improve survival while minimizing toxicity.
