GSA to Sell Fort Worth’s Fritz G. Lanham Federal Building, Projected $384 Million Savings

The General Services Administration (GSA) confirmed on Sept. 10 that the Fritz G. Garland Lanham Federal Building, located at 819 Taylor St. in downtown Fort Worth, is being offered for sale. The 14‑story, 669,264‑square‑foot structure and its adjoining parking garage will be listed as part of the agency’s ongoing effort to reduce long‑term federal real‑estate costs.

Significant taxpayer savings

According to the GSA, the disposition of the Lanham building and garage is projected to generate $384 million in savings for taxpayers. The agency has emphasized that a leaner, more efficient federal property portfolio better aligns with mission demands, workforce needs, and the expectations of American taxpayers.

Federal tenants will stay in the city

GSA officials stressed that the agencies currently housed in the building – including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Social Security Administration, the Internal Revenue Service, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development – will not be forced to relocate out of Fort Worth’s central business district. A GSA spokesperson said, “We are coordinating with tenant agencies to evaluate future space requirements and guarantee continuity of operations.”

Historical context and recent activity

The Lanham building, named for former congressman Fritz Garland Lanham, was completed in 1966 and designed by architects Wyatt C. Hedrick and Thomas E. Stanley. Its lobby features a 14‑by‑32‑foot abstract painting, “Challenge of Space,” by Seymour Fogel. This is not the first time the property has been listed for sale this year; it appeared on the GSA’s website in March before the listing was briefly removed.

Fort Worth has seen other federal properties offered for disposition. In April 2025, the GSA listed the 893,565‑square‑foot former Fort Worth Quartermaster Depot at 501 W. Felix St. for accelerated sale. That World War II‑era complex once served as a massive military supply hub and later housed the National Archives, among other agencies.

GSA’s broader real‑estate strategy

Since January 2025, the GSA reports having sold more than 127 properties nationwide, generating $614 million in revenue. In Texas, the agency recently sold a downtown San Antonio federal building for $30 million to make way for a new arena that will host the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs.

These transactions reflect a national trend toward modernizing the federal footprint, eliminating underused space, and redirecting resources to mission‑critical functions. By streamlining its real‑estate holdings, the GSA aims to ensure that taxpayer dollars are used efficiently and that federal employees have workspaces that meet contemporary needs.

What this means for Fort Worth

Local leaders and business owners are watching the sale closely, recognizing both the potential for new development opportunities and the importance of retaining federal jobs in the downtown area. The continued presence of key agencies should help sustain the economic activity generated by federal employees and visitors.
