Greenville’s Alexander Elementary Sees Significant Academic Progress

Alexander Elementary School in Greenville has made significant strides in academic progress, earning recognition as the seventh-most-improved school in the state for student academic growth on the South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Assessments (SC READY). The school increased student proficiency in English Language Arts by more than 14 percentage points since the 2024-25 school year.

Academic Achievement

The recent successes at Alexander Elementary School are the result of a four-year pilot program designed to improve the school’s academic performance. Greenville County Schools created a $7.8 million employee incentive model, called Elevate, to attract and train teachers for the district’s lowest-performing schools.

Dawn Booker, principal at Alexander Elementary School, explained that they intentionally brought together a team of staff for the school that provided exceptional talents, deep expertise, and an unwavering passion for education. “Every single day, this team brings their whole heart, relentless commitment, and belief that all students can learn,” Booker said.

Alexander Elementary School successfully moved from an Unsatisfactory to an Excellent rating on the SC School Report Card in its first year in the Elevate program. The report card rating is based on academic performance, student progress, multilingual learners’ progress, school climate, and other factors.

Since the 2023-24 school year, the percentage of students at Alexander Elementary School who meet or exceed expectations in English language arts has increased by 36.5 points. Student proficiency in math also increased by 26.8 percentage points in two years.
