The Greene County Department of Recreation marks the one‑year anniversary of the Made and Grown Market, now a staple at the Greene County Fairgrounds. The market was created to replace the weekly flea market that struggled to attract vendors.
From flea market to community showcase
“We were hosting a flea market every week and sometimes we would only have one vendor come,” said Courtney Hursey, director of recreation. “I realized the flea market had run its course, but I still wanted to do something for the community.”
Hursey and other recreation staff brainstormed a new concept, focusing on an evening market that highlights what local producers can make and grow. The result is a vendor‑style gathering featuring farm‑fresh produce, sewn goods, homemade candles and a rotating food‑truck offering.
When and where
The market takes place on the second Tuesday of every month from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Greene County Fairgrounds. Attendees enjoy a relaxed atmosphere while supporting Greene County families and regional artisans.
Community response
“I’ve really had a lot of fun with it,” Hursey said. “Getting to meet different people, and seeing what people can make and do has been a lot of fun.” She added that several vendors now return month after month, and shoppers often come specifically to see their favorite stalls.
“Just seeing the community come together and support vendors, and the vendors coming out to support the community has been a cool experience,” Hursey noted.
Looking ahead
Starting in 2027, the market will operate from January through May and again from September through December, with themed months planned to keep the experience fresh.
The Made and Grown Market reflects Greene County’s commitment to fostering local entrepreneurship, family‑friendly events, and a vibrant community spirit.
