Greene County Commission appoints Jason Johnson as interim sheriff

At a Tuesday afternoon briefing, the Greene County Commission voted unanimously to appoint Jason Johnson, a veteran of the sheriff’s office, as interim sheriff effective 4 p.m. on Aug. 18. Johnson will serve through Dec. 31, after which the winner of the Nov. 3 general election will complete Sheriff Jim Arnott’s term that runs until the end of 2028.

Background on the transition

Sheriff Jim Arnott, first elected in 2008 and re‑elected four times, submitted his resignation after his appointment as U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Missouri was confirmed by the Senate and signed by President Donald Trump. Arnott, who has served the county for nearly 38 years, joked, “I quit,” as he handed his resignation letter to Presiding Commissioner Bob Dixon.

Johnson’s qualifications and outlook

Johnson, who most recently held the position of administrative captain of operations, was the sole applicant for the interim role. Commissioners John Russell and Rusty MacLachlan praised his experience, noting that his unopposed candidacy signals confidence from the law‑enforcement community. Johnson told reporters he intends to maintain the county’s existing contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) while introducing modest changes, including moving forward with a body‑worn camera program for deputies.

Political context

The appointment occurs after the Aug. 4 primary and before the Aug. 25 deadline for parties to nominate candidates for the Nov. 3 ballot. Because the appointment fell within that window, both the Greene County Republican and Democratic central committees have a week to select their nominees. The Republican committee chair, Danette Proctor, indicated no other names are currently being considered, and Johnson plans to seek the committee’s endorsement that evening. The Democratic chair, Lanae Gillespie, said the party does not expect to field a candidate, meaning a Republican could run unopposed.

Community response

Members of the Immigrant Justice Collaborative (IJC) attended the briefing to protest Greene County’s contract with ICE, which allows the county jail to house hundreds of ICE detainees. After being asked to maintain decorum, IJC participants interrupted Johnson’s acceptance speech with chants of “No ICE, no way, end the contract here today,” and were escorted out by Commissioner Dixon.

Financial and campaign details

Johnson has already begun building a campaign fund. A July 15 filing with the Missouri Ethics Commission showed $103,040 on hand, including five contributions of $10,000 or more from local business leaders. No expenditures had been reported at that time. The IJC’s press release suggested Johnson has not yet earned the broad community support that Arnott enjoyed during his tenure.

Salary and statutory notes

The 2026 salary for the Greene County sheriff is $134,266, with the interim sheriff receiving a prorated portion of that amount. State law requires sheriffs in most Missouri counties to be paid 80 percent of the compensation of an associate circuit judge in the same county.

Johnson’s swearing‑in ceremony will take place at the Greene County Sheriff’s Office at 4 p.m. on Aug. 18, marking the first change in the office in nearly 18 years.
