Green Bay’s Nathan Halbach Honored with Horizon League Sportsmanship Award

Nathan Halbach, a distinguished member of the Green Bay Phoenix men’s swimming and diving team, has been honored with the Horizon League Sportsmanship Award. This prestigious accolade is given to student-athletes who exemplify the highest standards of sportsmanship and ethical conduct during competition, embodying values such as respect and integrity.

Leadership and Integrity

Halbach, who served as a captain for the Phoenix, has consistently demonstrated leadership both in and out of the pool. Known for his ability to lead by example, he has fostered a culture of accountability and respect among his teammates. His contributions were acknowledged earlier this spring when he received the swimming and diving sportsmanship award for the Horizon League.

Horizon League Commissioner Jill Bodensteiner praised Halbach, stating, “His leadership, commitment to serving others, and integrity reflect the very best of college athletics — and are traits that will serve Nathan for life!”

Community Impact

Beyond his athletic achievements, Halbach has made significant contributions to the Green Bay community through extensive volunteer work and campus leadership. He has been actively involved with organizations such as the Optimist Club, The Salvation Army, the Humane Society, and local homeless shelters, all through his role with Green Bay’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Josh Moon, the Mark Murphy Endowed Director of Athletics, commented on Halbach’s well-rounded character, saying, “This award is another example of how well-rounded he is as a person and a leader. We are excited to watch him excel as he enters the workforce and are proud to now call him a Phoenix alum.”

Academic and Campus Leadership

Halbach’s leadership extended to his role as Student Body President at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where he represented the student body with integrity and worked to create a positive and inclusive campus environment. His efforts in this role led to his selection as the UW System student leadership summit representative in 2024.

Swimming and diving head coach Alex Lewis remarked, “Nathan exemplifies leadership, humility, and service. His commitment to others and the example he sets every day makes him incredibly deserving of this recognition.”
