The Wisconsin Humane Society’s Green Bay campus has welcomed a new resident, a beagle named ‘Lambeau,’ who is now available for adoption. Lambeau is a 3-year-old, 22-pound male who was among 135 dogs recently released from Ridglan Farms, a breeding and research facility in Dane County.
According to the shelter, Lambeau is not yet accustomed to life outside of cages and will require extra patience and positive reinforcement as he adjusts to a new home environment. Prospective adopters will receive resources and guidance to help facilitate a smooth transition for Lambeau.
The cost to adopt Lambeau is set at $299, and it is important to note that he cannot be placed in a home with other dogs. The Wisconsin Humane Society emphasizes that with gentle care and time, these rescued dogs can form strong bonds and reveal their true personalities.
Background on Ridglan Farms
In late April, Ridglan Farms agreed to sell approximately 1,500 of its beagles to Big Dog Ranch Rescue and the Center for a Humane Economy. These organizations have been instrumental in distributing the dogs to shelters across Wisconsin and the nation. The Green Bay campus of the Wisconsin Humane Society has taken in about 45 of these beagles for adoption.
Ridglan Farms gained national attention in March when activists broke into the facility and removed 22 beagles. This incident was followed by a larger protest in April, where approximately 1,000 people attempted to free more beagles, resulting in a confrontation with law enforcement. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office reported 29 arrests during the clash.
Despite allegations of mistreatment, Ridglan Farms has denied any wrongdoing. However, the facility agreed to relinquish its state breeding license by July 1 as part of a deal to avoid prosecution on charges related to animal mistreatment, specifically concerning eye procedures performed on the beagles that violated state veterinary standards.
