Green Bay Hospital Undergoes $270M Renovation

Demolition has begun at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin, as part of a $270 million renovation and expansion project. The North Building, which has been part of the St. Mary’s campus since 1958, is being demolished to make way for a new six-story patient tower.

New Patient Tower

The new patient tower will significantly expand the hospital’s capacity to care for the community, with over 100 new patient rooms for medical/surgical and intensive care. The tower will also include two new cardiovascular operating rooms and a cardiac procedural room. Capacity for intensive care patients at St. Mary’s will more than quadruple, growing from eight beds to 36.

Contractors have been working to dismantle the inside of the North Building for several months, preparing the structure for demolition. Every step of the demolition and subsequent construction has been designed to ensure patient care is not interrupted and all services in the main hospital remain fully operational.

The hospital is also revitalizing the larger campus, including the creation of a new main entrance, added parking, and enhanced security features. New kitchen and dining areas are also part of the remodeling plans.

HSHS is repurposing and recycling construction materials, medical equipment, and furnishings from the now-vacant North Building. The items have been donated to organizations like Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach and the Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity.

Groundbreaking on the new patient tower is expected to take place in late summer or early fall this year, with the entire St. Mary’s revitalization project anticipated for completion in 2028.
