A 1,400 lb great white shark, named Breton, has been tracked swimming south towards Florida, surprising scientists. Typically, great white sharks migrate north during the summer to cooler waters where food is plentiful.
Unusual Migration Pattern
However, Breton has broken away from this pattern and has been spotted off the coast of Florida. His tracker ‘pinged’ near Daytona Beach on July 25, according to OCEARCH, a organization that tracks marine animals.
John Tyminki, OCEARCH data scientist, explained that seasonal food sources and cooler water temperatures are part of why sharks migrate north during the summer. ‘Breton always surprises us,’ he said. ‘He was tagged September 11, 2020, and has traveled more than 52,000 miles.’
Scientists are unsure why Breton has gone against the grain, but they speculate that he may be following seasonal schools of fish. ‘He is probably spending his time a lot deeper down where the water is colder,’ said John.
