Grapevine’s The Gatehouse launches vocation track to help single women gain skilled jobs

Grapevine, Texas – The Gatehouse, a nonprofit residential community that assists single women in becoming self‑sufficient, announced the addition of a new vocation track. The program, which began in April 2025, gives eligible participants up to 18 months to complete a trade, vocational certificate or STEM associate degree while living rent‑free on the campus, followed by an additional year of post‑graduation support.

Program details and support services

The Gatehouse operates on a 61‑acre campus with 96 apartments and provides childcare, financial coaching, counseling and other services designed to remove barriers to stable employment. Chief program officer Chelsea Hinman explained that the vocation track was created in response to shifting workforce needs in Texas, where nearly half of new job openings now require middle‑skill credentials beyond a high school diploma.

Participants receive housing at no cost, allowing them to focus on education and skill development without the pressure of rent. After completing their program, graduates can remain for up to a year while they transition into the workforce, receiving assistance with job placement and housing stability.

Local impact and success story

Ariel Richardson’s experience illustrates the program’s impact. Two years ago she was evicted and living in her car before discovering The Gatehouse through an Instagram ad. After enrolling, she earned certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and secured a position with an Austin‑based company as its first Dallas‑Fort Worth area employee.

Richardson credited the organization for clearing her eviction record, which helped her secure housing after graduation. She also noted a sense of divine guidance that led her to the program.

Funding and partnerships

The vocation track is supported by a $200,000+ scholarship fund from the mikeroweWORKS Foundation. The Gatehouse, founded in 2015 by Lisa Rose and former BNSF CEO Matt Rose, has assisted more than 900 women through its education, training and support initiatives, drawing funding from the Rose Family Foundation, private donors, foundations and corporate partners.

Hinman highlighted how the COVID‑19 pandemic amplified barriers such as job loss, furloughs and the closure of childcare centers, making the need for skill‑upgrading programs even more urgent. Rising cost‑of‑living pressures in the Dallas‑Fort Worth area also contributed to the decision to expand services.

Looking ahead

With the vocation track now operational, The Gatehouse aims to continue addressing the growing demand for middle‑skill workers in Texas. By offering comprehensive support—housing, education, childcare and counseling—the organization seeks to empower more single mothers to achieve economic independence and contribute to the regional workforce.
