Paddleboarding in Grand Teton National Park is a great way to experience the park’s crystal clear glacial lakes during the summer. However, before putting a paddleboard in the water, it is essential to have the necessary permits and know the rules.
Permits
A Grand Teton boat permit is required for all watercraft, including paddleboards. The permit costs $25 and can be purchased online at recreation.gov or in person at the visitor centers in Moose and Colter Bay during summer operations.
Rules
All watercraft, including paddleboards, must stop at a park Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) inspection station on the way into the park. Inspection stations are located just before the Grand Teton National Park entrance in Moose and just after the entrance in Moran.
Paddleboards are exempt from the Wyoming Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) decal requirements. However, every watercraft must carry an AIS inspection form while on the water and be ready to show it to a ranger if asked.
Gear
All vessels in Grand Teton National Park must have a U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD) of the appropriate size for each person on board. PFDs must be in good working condition and should be worn while on the water. Proper footwear, layers, water, bear spray, and a dry bag are recommended.
Etiquette
Avoid playing loud music while on the water, as excessive noise disrupts the nature experience for other boaters and disturbs wildlife. Make sure to steer clear of boaters, anglers, and fishing lines. Do not leave food, drinks, or other attractants unattended onshore.
