Grand Jury Indicts George Birmingham for July Double Murder Near Reform

Pickens County, Ala. — A grand jury in Pickens County has returned an indictment against George Birmingham, charging him with capital murder for the deaths of 43-year-old Justin Elrod and his 42-year-old wife, Lena Elrod. The indictment follows a July welfare check that revealed the couple’s bodies at their home near the city of Reform.

Investigation and Arrest

According to the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a reported burglary on County Road 49 at approximately 12:15 a.m. in mid‑July. While investigating the break‑in, officers identified Birmingham at the scene and placed him under arrest in connection with the burglary.

Family members, unable to reach the Elrods, asked law enforcement to conduct a welfare check. During the July 18 welfare check, officers entered the home and discovered the bodies of Justin and Lena Elrod. Evidence at the scene indicated foul play, and medical examiners determined the couple had been dead for several days.

Charges and Alleged Method

Court records allege Birmingham, a 45‑year‑old, used a metallic object to stab or strike Justin Elrod over the head and then employed an electric saw to kill Lena Elrod. In addition to capital murder, Birmingham faces two counts of murder, second‑degree burglary, possession of a controlled substance (identified as psilocybin), possession of marijuana, and resisting arrest.

Justin Elrod was employed at the Women’s Federal Correctional Institution in Aliceville and was a combat veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. The loss of a veteran and his spouse has deeply affected the local community.

Legal Status

Birmingham has been denied bond, and a trial date has not yet been set. The indictment underscores the swift response of Pickens County law‑enforcement officials and the grand jury’s commitment to holding violent offenders accountable.

Community Impact

The Elrods were well‑known in the Reform area, and their tragic deaths have prompted a renewed focus on public safety in the county. Local leaders have expressed gratitude to deputies who acted quickly to investigate the burglary and conduct the welfare check that ultimately uncovered the crime.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the sheriff’s office. The grand jury’s action sends a clear message that violent crime will be pursued aggressively, reinforcing the safety and moral fabric of Pickens County families.
