The community of Grand Chute, Wisconsin, has a new reason to celebrate with the opening of ‘Barks & Recreation,’ a 15-acre dog park designed to be a haven for dogs and their owners. The park, located near Fox Valley Technical College, was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local officials and community members.
A Community Effort
The park’s name, ‘Barks & Recreation,’ was chosen through a community-wide contest, highlighting the local involvement and anticipation surrounding this project. Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson expressed his excitement, noting the park as a long-awaited addition to the community.
Construction of the $1.4 million park began last July, and it features separate areas for large and small dogs, an agility area equipped for dog trials, and over 70 parking stalls to ensure a safe and controlled environment for visitors. The park is free to enter and is open daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Honoring Service and Companionship
In collaboration with the Veterans Services Office, the park will also host memorials for pets and military service dogs, adding a meaningful tribute to the space. Justin Schumacher, Outagamie County Parks Director, emphasized the park’s role in providing a safe and enjoyable environment for dogs and their owners.
Anna Wienkes, Director of Development at the Fox Valley Humane Association, was among the first to test the park with her dog, Retta. She praised the park as a fantastic new venue for dogs to socialize and exercise.
The creation of ‘Barks & Recreation’ stems from the need to relocate the existing dog park due to Outagamie County’s landfill expansion plans. After evaluating several sites, the current location was chosen for its accessibility and potential to serve the community’s needs.
