Montgomery, Ala. – Governor Kay Ivey announced Friday night that Hurricane Isaias has taken the lives of two Alabamians. The storm’s fierce winds felled a tree onto a home on Monterey Drive in Birmingham, killing one resident and trapping another.
Emergency response and ongoing cleanup
Fire crews from Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived shortly after midnight and have remained on the scene through Saturday morning. Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency Director Jim Coker confirmed the fatality and noted that a second person was trapped inside the damaged house.
In a statement, Governor Ivey said, “This storm cannot clear fast enough. It brought heavy winds throughout Alabama, taking down trees, knocking out power and doing some damage. Unfortunately, we have also learned that two Alabamians have lost their lives. I am praying for their loved ones this morning.”
Statewide recovery efforts
The governor praised the dedication of state crews working to clear debris, restore power, and assess damage across the Commonwealth. “I offer my sincere thanks to the various crews we have positioned throughout the state who have been diligently working to clear debris and restore power. That is the focus right now, and I am proud to report that all major roadways, including the Interstate 65 corridor, have been reopened,” Ivey said.
Despite progress, some road closures remain due to downed power lines. Linemen are actively restoring service, and in Escambia County, crews continue to reopen a portion of US‑31 north of Brewton.
Emergency declarations and evacuation guidance
Governor Ivey also announced the rescission of the supplemental state of emergency proclamation that required mandatory evacuation of non‑residents in parts of Mobile and Baldwin counties. The decision reflects the reduced threat level as the storm moves inland.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant, practice safety while cleaning up, and follow any further guidance from local officials.
Looking ahead
State officials will continue to monitor the situation, coordinate with utility companies, and provide assistance to affected families. The Alabama Emergency Management Agency is coordinating with federal partners to ensure resources are available for any lingering needs.
