Gov. Kay Ivey Honors Dolly Parton and Expands Alabama’s Imagination Library

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey joined mourners statewide in honoring the late Dolly Parton, calling the singer‑songwriter a “true American treasure.” While most remember Parton for her music, Ivey emphasized that her greatest legacy may be the impact of her Imagination Library on Alabama’s youngest readers.

Imagination Library reaches every corner of the state

Since launching the program statewide in 2023, the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education has mailed a free, age‑appropriate book each month to children from birth through age five. Ivey reported that roughly 116,000 Alabama children now receive a book each month, and more than 3 million books have been sent since the program’s inception. The initiative serves families in all 67 counties, ensuring that even children in rural areas have access to high‑quality literature.

New license‑plate fundraiser to keep books flowing

To sustain and expand the effort, the governor announced a specialty Imagination Library license plate. Pre‑commitments have already met the production threshold, and the plates are expected to roll out within eight to twelve weeks. Proceeds from each plate will stay in the county where the vehicle is registered, directly funding the monthly book shipments for children in that community.

Governor Ivey’s commitment to early literacy

“Alabama is honored to be part of Dolly Parton’s legacy,” Ivey said. “We will continue putting books into the hands and homes of our children, giving families the tools they need to build early literacy skills.” The governor’s remarks underscore a broader state focus on parental‑rights and family‑centered education, aligning with the belief that parents should have the resources to nurture a love of reading at home.

How families can enroll

Eligible families can sign up for the Imagination Library through the program’s website. Once enrolled, a new book arrives each month, free of charge, directly to the family’s mailbox. The initiative not only promotes reading proficiency but also supports the development of critical thinking and imagination in Alabama’s next generation.

Community response

Local educators and parent groups praised the governor’s dedication. “Having a book in a child’s hands every month is a game‑changer for early development,” said a Tuscaloosa elementary teacher who has seen enrollment rise dramatically since the statewide rollout. Parents echoed the sentiment, noting that the free books relieve financial pressure while fostering a culture of reading at home.

As Alabama continues to honor Dolly Parton’s commitment to children, the Imagination Library stands as a tangible example of how public‑private partnership can serve families, strengthen communities, and uphold the values of faith, family, and liberty that define the state’s heritage.
