Gov. Abbott surveys Ross Fire damage in Palo Pinto and Jack counties

Governor Greg Abbott joined Texas Division of Emergency Management Chief Nim Kidd, along with local officials, emergency managers and first responders, to assess the damage caused by the Ross Fire in Palo Pinto and Jack counties on Thursday morning. The on‑site tour underscores the administration’s commitment to protecting Texas families and property from the growing threat of wildfires.

Fire size, containment and impact

According to the Texas A&M Forest Service, the Ross Fire has scorched roughly 90,400 acres and is currently 38% contained. The blaze has already destroyed more than 150 structures, including 18 homes, and continues to threaten additional residences and businesses in the region.

Cause of the blaze

State investigators have determined the fire was human‑caused, originating from equipment or vehicle use associated with a roadside start. Early reports suggested a tire blowout, but further review led investigators to broaden the description, noting they could not conclusively pinpoint a tire blowout as the exact ignition source. The investigation was conducted by Texas A&M Forest Service Law Enforcement in coordination with local law‑enforcement agencies, and officials emphasized that “human‑caused” does not imply intentional arson.

Historical context

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth identified the Ross Fire as the second‑largest wildfire in the area’s recorded history, trailing only the PK Complex Fire of 2011, which burned about 127,000 acres.

State response and next steps

Governor Abbott’s presence on the ground highlights the administration’s proactive approach to wildfire management. The governor and emergency officials will use the findings from Thursday’s survey to refine response strategies, allocate resources, and support affected homeowners as recovery efforts begin.

Residents are urged to stay informed through local emergency alerts and to follow safety guidelines issued by the Texas A&M Forest Service and local fire departments.
