Gov. Abbott pushes three‑year bachelor’s degrees to cut college costs in Texas

Dallas, TX – Governor Greg Abbott unveiled a plan Wednesday that would require Texas public universities to create accelerated three‑year bachelor’s degree programs. The initiative, announced at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, is part of the governor’s broader effort to make higher education more affordable for Texas families.

Cost savings and workforce focus

Under the proposal, schools would offer at least ten degree tracks that can be completed in 90 credit hours instead of the traditional 120. Abbott said each additional year of college adds tuition, fees, housing and living expenses, delaying graduates’ entry into the workforce. He estimates that a three‑year path could save students between $15,000 and $35,000.

The governor wants the accelerated programs to concentrate on high‑demand fields such as cybersecurity, information technology and supply‑chain management. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board would work with universities to ensure the programs maintain “high academic standards” and align with state workforce needs.

Implementation and oversight

To move forward, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board must develop recommendations for the governor by Dec. 31. A working group—including higher‑education officials, faculty leaders, employers and accrediting bodies—will identify suitable degree programs, set academic standards and gather feedback from students and industry.

Any university wishing to launch a three‑year degree will need approval from the coordinating board and independent accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, which recently approved a framework for reduced‑credit bachelor’s degrees.

Summer tuition discount

In the same announcement, Abbott proposed a summer‑course tuition discount: students taking one to five credit hours would receive a $500 reduction, while those enrolling in six or more credits would get $1,000 off. He cited successful discounts at the University of Texas at Dallas and the University of Texas at Austin, which boosted summer enrollment by more than 25% and generated additional revenue.

Abbott’s education agenda also includes a four‑year freeze on public‑university tuition and a free college‑application week each October, initiatives aimed at easing the financial burden on Texas families.

Legislative path

The proposal must clear the Texas Legislature, which reconvenes next year, before the governor can sign it into law. Abbott faces Democratic challenger State Rep. Gina Hinojosa in the November election, but his education plan has already drawn attention from parents, students and business leaders eager for a faster, more affordable route to skilled employment.
