GOP Proposal Targets Foreign-Born Lawmakers in Congress

In a recent development, Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., addressed a GOP proposal that seeks to prevent foreign-born individuals from serving in Congress. The proposal, introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., aims to amend the Constitution to require that all members of Congress, federal judges, and Senate-confirmed officers be natural-born citizens, aligning with the requirements for the presidency.

Constitutional Amendment Proposal

Rep. Mace’s proposal has sparked a significant conversation about the role of foreign-born citizens in American governance. Mace specifically mentioned Omar, who was born in Somalia and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000, as one of the lawmakers her resolution targets. Mace argues that holding power in the American government should be reserved for natural-born citizens to ensure undivided loyalty to the United States.

Currently, there are 26 members of Congress who are not natural-born citizens, including 19 Democrats and seven Republicans. The proposed amendment would require approval from two-thirds of both the House and Senate, followed by ratification from three-fourths of the states, making it a challenging endeavor.

Responses and Reactions

Omar, when asked about the proposal, appeared unfazed, expressing skepticism about its potential to pass. She also responded to another piece of legislation, the “Disqualifying Dual Loyalty Act” by Rep. Randy Fine, R-Fla., which would ban individuals with dual citizenship from serving in Congress unless they renounce their foreign citizenship. Omar’s response to this proposal was dismissive, indicating her belief that such measures are unlikely to gain traction.

Fine’s legislation, like Mace’s proposal, emphasizes the importance of undivided allegiance to the United States for those in positions of legislative power. However, it has not progressed significantly in Congress since its introduction.

These proposals highlight ongoing debates about citizenship and loyalty within the context of American governance, raising questions about the balance between inclusivity and national allegiance.
