GOP Abandons Veterans Bill

House GOP leaders were forced to abandon a signature veterans benefits bill amid an intra-party dispute. The bill, which aimed to expand benefits for veterans, was met with opposition from some Republicans who were concerned about certain provisions, including the reduction of disability coverage for some veterans.

Bill Provisions

The bill would have paid for expanded benefits by limiting payouts for future recipients’ disability claims, including compensation for tinnitus and sleep apnea. Critics argued that this would effectively eliminate compensation for these conditions.

Some GOP lawmakers, including Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, opposed the bill, citing concerns about the reduction in benefits. Luna stated that she would not vote for the bill because it took away certain medical benefits for service members.

Another GOP lawmaker, Rep. Jeff Van Drew, also expressed opposition to the bill, stating that he would not change his vote. Van Drew said that he loved 90% of the bill but did not like the idea of reducing benefits for some veterans to help others.

Implications

The collapse of the veterans bill is a setback for House GOP leaders, particularly Speaker Mike Johnson, who had hoped to pass the bill as one of the party’s big legislative wins before the midterms. The defeat may also have implications for the party’s ability to pass other legislation, including a $95 billion emergency funding bill.
