Volusia County – A coordinated rescue effort unfolded on Lake Woodruff early Thursday morning after a 911 call reported a fisherman experiencing a medical emergency. The call, received at approximately 6:45 a.m., set in motion a rapid response involving the sheriff’s office, Air One helicopter, county deputies, emergency medical services and a local boater who volunteered his own vessel.
Rapid mobilization of resources
Volusia County Sheriff’s Office dispatchers alerted Air One, the county’s aerial rescue unit, which located the pontoon boat carrying the 56‑year‑old fisherman. Flight Paramedic Matt Brunelle exited the helicopter and entered the water, swimming toward the boat to provide immediate assistance.
Simultaneously, deputies on the shore encountered a civilian boater who agreed to assist. Under direction from the Air One crew, the Good Samaritan guided his boat to the pontoon, allowing deputies and EMS personnel to board and begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the victim.
Joint effort on the water
While Brunelle took control of the boat’s steering, the deputies and EMS staff continued life‑saving measures. The combined team worked together as they navigated back toward shore, maintaining CPR and monitoring the fisherman’s condition.
Upon reaching the shoreline, an ambulance was already waiting to transport the patient for further medical care. Despite the concerted effort of the aerial crew, ground responders, and the civilian volunteer, the fisherman did not survive the incident.

The rescue highlights the importance of swift communication with emergency services and the willingness of local citizens to aid in critical situations. Volusia County officials praised the cooperation among agencies and the Good Samaritan’s quick decision to help.
