Good Good Golf co‑founder apologizes after controversial ad sparks industry backlash

Good Good Golf co‑founder Garrett Clark posted a video on August 21 apologizing for a recently deleted advertisement that showed him shoving colleague Alexis Miestowski to the ground while demanding, “Do not touch my new driver.” The skit, meant to spoof a horror film, was widely condemned as depicting violence against women.

Company response and industry fallout

Good Good quickly removed the ad and issued a written apology, stating the content did not align with the brand’s values of inclusivity in golf. Clark reiterated his personal disavowal of any form of domestic abuse and expressed hope that the company could move past the incident.

Retail partners reacted swiftly. Dick’s Sporting Goods and Golf Galaxy have pulled Good Good merchandise from both physical stores and online catalogs. The Golf Channel also delayed the premiere of the reality series “Big Break x Good Good” after a sponsor requested the removal of the brand’s logo.

PGA Tour sponsorship under review

Good Good is the title sponsor of a PGA Tour event scheduled for November 12‑15 in Austin, Texas. Tour commissioner Brian Rolapp said the situation is “fluid” and that the Tour will continue to monitor developments. He noted the initial response from Good Good was “disappointing” and appeared defensive.

CEO Matt Kendrick told the Wall Street Journal that the company fully owns the mistake and that internal processes will be tightened. He emphasized that the ad was intended as a light‑hearted spoof, not a serious statement.

Clark’s extended apology

In an eight‑minute video, Clark provided behind‑the‑scenes footage showing he never actually struck Miestowski. He condemned the negative messages directed at her on social media and asked fans to forgive both himself and the brand. Clark added that Good Good remains committed to growing the women’s side of golf, a key strategic goal for the company.

The controversy highlights the heightened sensitivity of today’s consumers and sponsors to depictions of gender‑based violence, even in comedic contexts. Companies that fail to align marketing with community values risk swift retailer and sponsor backlash.
