Golf Channel analyst Eamon Lynch has criticized Long Island golf fans, calling them ‘a stain on the game’ after incidents at the US Open at Shinnecock Hills.
Incidents at the US Open
Lynch’s comments came after authorities had to remove patrons from the course on Sunday due to heckling of the US Open leader, Wyndham Clark. Fans were heard screaming, ‘Don’t choke Wyndham,’ and ‘Get in the bunker’ during his final round.
Lynch believes that Long Island golf fans have been too ‘repetitive’ and ‘predictable’ to allow high-stakes tournaments to be played there in the future. He also suggested that golf in its entirety needs to take the Augusta National model, which includes no phones, no tolerance, and no second chance.
Past Incidents
This is not the first time that Long Island golf fans have been criticized for their behavior. At the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, fans were heard taunting players, and Rory McIlroy’s wife, Erica Stoll, had a beer thrown at her while walking on the course.
McIlroy had previously stated that golf should be held to a higher standard than what was seen at the Ryder Cup. Lynch agrees, saying that the decorum of being a golf patron, especially at a major championship, is paramount.
