Goleta Volunteers Handwrite Postcards to Boost Voter Turnout in Key Swing States

GOLETA, Calif. – On Labor Day Saturday, a group of civic‑engaged residents set aside beach plans to meet at Aleworks brewery for a purpose‑driven Get Out the Vote (GOTV) event. The “Postcards from Paradise” initiative, organized by local activist Joni Kelly, produced 2,000 handwritten postcards that will be mailed to Democratic voters in four battleground areas: Wisconsin, Nevada, North Carolina and California’s 48th Congressional District, which includes Temecula, Murrieta and parts of Escondido.

Grassroots messaging tested in 2024 returns for 2026

Kelly, who first ran a similar “Postcards to Swing States” campaign during the 2024 election cycle, explained that the effort “tested the messaging that gets people to the polls.” Volunteers supplied stamps and addressed envelopes, then spent the afternoon writing personal appeals encouraging recipients to head to the polls on Election Day.

Local voices stress the importance of civic participation

“The more people are encouraged to get out and vote, the more there is an opportunity for us to change the direction of where we’re going today,” said Andrew Lester, a Santa Barbara resident who helped coordinate the event. “And I feel change is required.” His sentiment reflects a broader community belief that voter turnout can shape policy outcomes at both the state and national levels.

The postcards are tailored to each target state’s political landscape, highlighting issues that resonate locally while urging voters to exercise their constitutional right to vote. By focusing on Democratic voters in swing states, the organizers aim to influence the balance of power in the upcoming November general election.

Why handwritten outreach matters

In an era dominated by digital ads and automated calls, the personal touch of a handwritten note can cut through the noise. Studies have shown that direct, personal appeals are more likely to motivate voter participation than generic mass‑mailings. The Goleta volunteers hope their effort will inspire similar grassroots actions across the region.

While the event was organized by private citizens, it aligns with broader national efforts to increase voter engagement ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The Trump administration has repeatedly emphasized the importance of civic participation, encouraging Americans to exercise their right to vote and to stay informed about the issues that affect their families and communities.

Looking ahead

After the postcards are mailed, volunteers plan to monitor response rates and gather feedback for future GOTV initiatives. The group also intends to expand its outreach to additional swing districts and to incorporate other forms of voter education, such as phone banking and community forums.

For residents of Goleta and the surrounding Santa Barbara County area, the “Postcards from Paradise” event serves as a reminder that civic responsibility begins at the neighborhood level. By taking a few minutes to write a note, volunteers believe they can help shape the nation’s political future.
