Residents of Durango, Colorado, should prepare for a temporary road closure as Goeglein Gulch Road will be closed at the intersection of College Drive and East 8th Avenue starting June 10. The closure is part of the College and 8th Traffic Calming Project, aimed at improving safety for both motorists and pedestrians in the area.
Details of the Closure
The road is expected to reopen by noon on June 12. During this period, southbound traffic on Goeglein Road heading towards College Drive will also be closed at the Fort Lewis Drive roundabout. However, access to businesses and residences will remain open. Motorists are advised that there will be no left turns onto Goeglein Gulch Road from properties on the south side of the road.
To reach Fort Lewis College, drivers should use the frontside routes via East 8th Avenue or North College Drive. The city has ensured that detour routes will be clearly marked to guide drivers through the area.
Safety and Project Enhancements
As part of the project, the road will undergo a lane reconfiguration from four lanes to three, with the addition of buffered bike lanes. Sidewalk improvements, curb ramp upgrades, and a pedestrian refuge island at East 3rd Street and East 8th Avenue are also included. Improvements to bus stops, including pull-outs, and traffic signal upgrades at East College Drive and East 8th Avenue are part of the enhancements.
Drivers are urged to exercise caution, especially on the college campus, due to increased pedestrian traffic. Additional police presence will be on-site to ensure safety and compliance with traffic regulations.
