GLP-1s May Help Male Fertility

A recent study has found that GLP-1 medications, commonly used to treat diabetes and aid in weight loss, may actually help improve male fertility. The research, which involved men ages 18 to 65, showed that after 24 weeks of treatment with GLP-1s, participants experienced improved testosterone levels, sperm count, and sperm size and shape.

Understanding the Study

According to Dr. Pratibha Natesh, the principal investigator of the study, the results suggest that men considering GLP-1s for weight loss or medical conditions may want to consider the potential benefits for their fertility as well. Weight loss, which often accompanies GLP-1 treatment, can lead to healthier hormone function, including testosterone levels.

Additionally, taking GLP-1 medications may reduce inflammation and metabolic stress, which can limit sperm production. However, more studies are needed before GLP-1s can be prescribed as a first-line treatment for male infertility.

Expert Insights

Dr. Lidia Mínguez Alarcón, a reproductive epidemiologist, noted that while the results are promising, it is essential to conduct further research to confirm the findings. Dr. Amin Herati, a urologist, emphasized the importance of having a fertility evaluation with a reproductive urologist to determine the underlying causes of infertility.

Improving reproductive health is not just important for those looking to conceive, but also for overall health. Good semen quality and healthy testosterone levels have been associated with better long-term health in men. To improve fertility and overall health, experts recommend restricting ultraprocessed foods, getting regular exercise, limiting sedentary habits, reducing toxic chemical exposures, and avoiding excessive heat.
