Global poll shows declining comfort with US and China as world leaders

A worldwide survey commissioned by the Rockefeller Foundation and conducted in 34 nations between July 21 and August 5 reveals a growing appetite for multilateral cooperation, yet a pronounced reluctance to see the United States or China assume dominant leadership roles.

Key findings

While 57% of respondents say countries should work together on security challenges even if it means compromising some national interests—up from 55% in the previous year—only 39% feel comfortable with the United States taking a leading role and just 37% with China.

Canada emerged as the most trusted potential leader at 60%, followed by Japan (58%) and Australia (55%). The European Union and Britain trailed closely, while the United Nations earned 52% support.

Economic pessimism and security concerns

Nearly 70% of those surveyed believe the world has worsened over the past year, and only 38% expect their national economies to improve over the next five years. Optimism fell sharply in major economies, dropping 26 points in India to 50% and 16 points in China to 56%.

Respondents also identified major threats: 42% viewed Russia as a primary danger, compared with 34% for the United States and 30% for China. The United States was seen as the greatest threat in 15 countries, with the highest percentages in Indonesia (73%), Brazil (59%), Mexico (58%) and Turkey (57%).

Rising confidence in international bodies

Trust in the World Health Organization increased to 69% from 61%, and confidence in the United Nations rose to 62% from 58%.

The World Bank, International Monetary Fund, International Criminal Court and World Trade Organization all recorded notable gains, with the World Bank reaching 55% trust, the IMF 51%, the ICC 54% and the WTO 57%.

Context and commentary

Eric Pelofsky, vice president of the Rockefeller Foundation, said the results underscore the credibility of a “middle powers” approach championed by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. He warned that the erosion of U.S. leadership reflects a broader global shift toward collective problem‑solving.

The poll was released ahead of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, following months of conflict in the Middle East that have disrupted energy markets and heightened inflation worldwide.
