Global Gifts Fair‑Trade Store on Mass Ave. to Close After 38 Years

After 38 years of bringing ethically sourced goods to Indy, Global Gifts will close its longtime Mass Ave. storefront on Thursday, Oct. 29. The nonprofit will continue to serve shoppers at its Nora location on E. Westfield Blvd. through December.

Why the closure?

Board member Jo Ellen Buffie, who has managed the Mass Ave. shop for the past two years, explained that the store “never really recovered” from the COVID‑19 pandemic. While the organization relies on volunteers to keep payroll low, even those savings have become insufficient as administrative expenses rose.

Before the pandemic, each Global Gifts site operated with roughly 45‑50 volunteers. Today, the number has dwindled to about five, making it harder to sustain daily operations.

Competition from online retailers

Buffie also pointed to the growing dominance of corporate e‑commerce platforms, especially Amazon, which now offers fair‑trade items delivered directly to consumers. “Convenience just overwhelmed what we could do,” she said, noting that similar closures are occurring nationwide.

What Global Gifts offers

Founded in 1988 by members of the First Mennonite Church, Global Gifts began as a church bazaar vendor and grew into a multi‑location nonprofit. The store sells clothing, stationery, toys, home goods and jewelry sourced from more than 40 countries, including Kenya, Ghana, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Its mission aligns with the global fair‑trade movement, which seeks to ensure workers in developing nations receive fair wages and work in safe conditions.

Over its near‑four‑decade history, Global Gifts operated four locations across Indianapolis, Bloomington and Columbus, Ohio. The Bloomington and Columbus stores closed in 2023, leaving the Mass Ave. and Nora sites as the last remaining outlets.

Community impact

Buffie emphasized the educational role the shop has played, helping customers recognize fair‑trade symbols and ask about the origins of their purchases. “We’ve educated people on fair trade. More people can look for the symbol and ask where their goods are made,” she said.

Local shoppers who value ethically sourced products are encouraged to visit the Nora location before it also closes in December.

Looking ahead

While the Mass Ave. closure marks the end of an era for Indianapolis’ fair‑trade scene, the nonprofit hopes the remaining store can continue its mission of promoting ethical consumption and supporting artisans worldwide.
