Global Alliance for Female Athletes Grows to Nine Nations

The Australian Sports Commission announced on Friday that the Global Alliance for Female Athletes (GAFA) has expanded its membership from four to nine nations. Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Switzerland have joined as full members, while Ireland and Belgium will participate as supporting partners.

International Collaboration to Boost Women’s Sport

GAFA was launched last year by organizations from Australia, the United States, Britain and New Zealand with the goal of improving health and performance outcomes for women in sport. The alliance brings together national sport bodies, research institutions and medical practitioners to address gaps in knowledge that affect female athletes.

Rachel Harris, lead of the Australian Institute of Sport’s Female Performance Health Initiative, said the expansion demonstrates a strong global appetite for shared research and practical solutions. “By working together across borders, we’re able to accelerate research, share lessons faster and ensure more female athletes benefit from the latest evidence and insights,” Harris said in a statement.

Focus on Female‑Specific Health Issues

One of GAFA’s top priorities is ensuring that research focused on women’s health reaches athletes, coaches and sports‑medicine professionals worldwide. The alliance is especially attentive to conditions that disproportionately affect female athletes, such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. Studies have shown that women are two to six times more likely than men to sustain an ACL tear, a disparity that drives the need for targeted prevention and treatment strategies.

Through coordinated research projects, data‑sharing agreements and joint conferences, GAFA members aim to develop evidence‑based guidelines that can be applied in training programs, rehabilitation protocols and everyday coaching practices.

What the Expansion Means for Local Communities

While the alliance operates on an international scale, its work has direct implications for local sports clubs, schools and health providers. Coaches and trainers in community settings can access the latest research findings through GAFA’s online portal, while medical practitioners can benefit from shared clinical guidelines.

Australian athletes, for example, will have increased opportunities to participate in multinational studies, gaining exposure to cutting‑edge training methods and injury‑prevention techniques. Similar benefits are expected for athletes in the newly added member nations, where resources for women’s sport have historically been limited.

Looking Ahead

The Australian Institute of Sport emphasized that the alliance’s growth will help close research gaps and promote lasting change for female athletes worldwide. As more countries join, GAFA hopes to expand its network of coaches, researchers and health professionals, fostering a collaborative environment that puts women’s health and performance at the forefront of sport.

For now, the alliance will focus on launching joint research initiatives, publishing best‑practice guidelines and hosting a series of webinars aimed at educating stakeholders across the nine member nations.
