Giants add veteran defensive lineman Dean Lowry to practice squad

The New York Giants have signed veteran defensive lineman Dean Lowry to their practice squad, according to an ESPN report on Monday. Lowry, 32, joins the team after being released by the Pittsburgh Steelers as part of the league‑wide 53‑man roster reductions on Aug. 30.

Career background and recent injury

Lowry entered the NFL in 2016 when the Green Bay Packers selected him in the fourth round out of Northwestern. Over seven seasons with the Packers, he compiled 16.5 sacks, five fumble recoveries and 271 tackles in 132 games, starting 85 of them. He spent the 2023 season with the Minnesota Vikings before signing with the Steelers for the 2024 campaign.

During Pittsburgh’s 2025 training camp, Lowry suffered a torn ACL, causing him to miss the entire 2025 season. The injury required surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation process, but medical staff confirmed he is now cleared to resume full‑time football activities.

What Lowry brings to the Giants

Lowry’s experience across three NFL franchises gives the Giants a seasoned interior‑line presence. His ability to generate pressure up the middle and contribute to run defense aligns with New York’s defensive scheme, which emphasizes gap control and quarterback disruption. While practice‑squad contracts do not guarantee a spot on the active roster, they provide a pathway for players to earn promotion through performance in practice and preseason games.

Giants head coach name praised Lowry’s work ethic, stating, “Dean brings a veteran’s perspective and a relentless motor. He’s a great addition to our depth group, and we’ll see how he competes for a role on the active roster.”

Impact on the roster

The Giants’ defensive line currently features a mix of young talent and established starters. Adding Lowry offers additional insurance against injuries and gives the coaching staff more flexibility in rotating players throughout the season. The move also reflects the organization’s broader strategy of blending home‑grown prospects with seasoned professionals to maintain competitiveness.

Lowry’s signing comes as the Giants continue to evaluate their roster ahead of the upcoming preseason. Fans can expect to see him participate in training sessions and potentially in preseason matchups, where his performance will determine whether he earns a promotion to the 53‑man roster.

Looking ahead

For a team seeking to improve its defensive front, Lowry’s addition is a modest but meaningful step. His veteran presence may also serve as a mentorship resource for younger linemen navigating the transition to the NFL. As the Giants prepare for the 2026 season, the practice squad will remain a critical component of roster depth, and Lowry’s experience could prove valuable when the team faces the inevitable wear and tear of a full NFL campaign.
