Ghanaian Soccer Fans in Worcester Unite for World Cup Support

In Worcester, Massachusetts, the local Ghanaian community is gearing up to support their national soccer team, the Black Stars, as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup. This event is seen as an opportunity for Ghana to shine on the global stage, bringing together fans from all walks of life.

Community Gathering at Anokye Krom

Anokye Krom, a well-known restaurant in Worcester, has become a hub for Ghanaian soccer fans. Owned by Richard Boateng, the restaurant is named after a 17th-century West African priest and warrior, reflecting the spirit of the Black Stars. The establishment serves authentic Ghanaian cuisine and doubles as a gathering place for soccer enthusiasts.

“Soccer brings everybody together. Football is something powerful,” Boateng expressed, highlighting the unifying force of the sport. His passion for soccer has been passed down to his son, Isaac Boateng, who recalls soccer being an integral part of life in Ghana.

Unity Through Soccer

For many Ghanaians, the national team represents more than just athletic prowess. It is a symbol of national unity, bridging political, religious, and ethnic divides. This sentiment was particularly evident when Ghana qualified for its first World Cup in 2006, a moment that brought the nation together.

“It’s a moment that brings national unity anytime the national team is playing regardless of political affiliations or religious affiliations,” said Kwame Kesse, a Ghanaian fan. The team’s success in reaching the World Cup quarterfinals in 2010 further fueled national pride and demonstrated Ghana’s ability to compete on the world stage.

Looking Forward to the 2026 World Cup

As the Black Stars prepare to face England at Boston Stadium in Foxborough on June 23, fans are hopeful for another memorable performance. The Ghanaian community in Worcester is ready to rally behind their team, united by their shared love for soccer and their homeland.
