German voters head to polls in Mecklenburg‑Western Pomerania and Berlin amid pressure on Chancellor Merz

On Sunday, voters in the German states of Mecklenburg‑Western Pomerania and Berlin will cast ballots in elections that could further test Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s leadership. The CDU’s standing has fallen sharply in recent polls, with the party hovering near the five‑percent threshold needed for representation in the Mecklenburg‑Western Pomerania parliament.

Polls show tight races and rising AfD support

According to the latest Forschungsgruppe Wahlen poll released on Friday, the CDU is at just 6% in Mecklenburg‑Western Pomerania, while the Social Democratic Party (SPD) leads at 37% and the far‑right Alternative for Germany (AfD) trails closely at 36%. The Left Party sits at 9% and the Greens at 5%, barely clearing the entry mark.

In Berlin, the same poll puts the Left Party ahead of the CDU for the first time in months, with the Left at 22%, the CDU at 20%, the Greens at 15% and the SPD at 12%. The AfD holds 18% of the vote, moving into third place behind the Left and ahead of the CDU.

Merz’s challenges and policy response

Merz, who took office last year on a platform of ambitious reforms to revive Germany’s stagnant economy, has struggled to win over skeptical voters. Unpopular pension, tax and health‑care reforms, combined with a series of communication missteps, have contributed to a decline in his approval rating, which recent surveys place as low as 14%.

In response to soaring fuel prices that are especially burdensome in the rural Mecklenburg‑Western Pomerania region, Merz announced a relief package on Friday that includes tax cuts on gasoline and diesel. The move is intended to ease the cost of transport for residents who rely heavily on cars.

Implications for the “firewall” strategy

The upcoming elections will test the CDU’s “firewall” approach, under which mainstream parties have pledged not to form coalitions with the AfD. While the AfD’s gains have shocked many observers, the party’s recent performance still falls short of the absolute majority it achieved in Saxony‑Anhalt earlier this month.

Senior figures within the CDU have publicly rallied behind Merz, noting that replacing the chancellor would be constitutionally complex and could leave any successor facing the same deep economic challenges.

Local concerns dominate the campaigns

Beyond the national headlines, voters in both states are focused on everyday issues. In Mecklenburg‑Western Pomerania, high energy costs and housing affordability dominate the conversation, while Berlin’s campaign centers on the city’s housing crisis and the Left Party’s push for more affordable homes.

Both polls suggest that the SPD’s popular state premier, Manuela Schwesig, is gaining momentum in Mecklenburg‑Western Pomerania, potentially reshaping the balance of power in the state parliament.

What’s at stake

Should the CDU fail to clear the parliamentary threshold in Mecklenburg‑Western Pomerania, it would mark the party’s worst‑ever state‑level result and could further erode confidence in Merz’s leadership. Conversely, a strong showing by the SPD or the Left Party could shift coalition dynamics in both states, influencing policy directions on energy, housing and social welfare.

As the elections approach, the German political landscape remains in flux, with the AfD’s rise prompting renewed debate over the effectiveness of the “firewall” and the future direction of the country’s traditional parties.
