The City of Georgetown is growing, and to help keep all residents safe, the Georgetown Police Department (GPD) has implemented a new traffic safety unit.
Keeping Local Streets Safe
According to GPD Lt. Chris Perkins, the new unit will help relieve patrol officers so they can handle higher-priority calls. The traffic safety officers can handle collisions, direct traffic, and more.
There are currently two traffic safety officers, with plans to expand the unit in the future. The officers have been cruising the Georgetown streets since early May and have received a warm welcome from the community.
One of the traffic safety officers, Becky Lewis, said she enjoys meeting people and helping them. She also mentioned that the new unit helps patrol officers focus on more critical tasks.
