George Washington, the first president of the United States, is often remembered for his role in American history, but there are several lesser-known facts about his life. One of these facts is that Washington was a skilled dancer. According to Douglas Bradburn, president and CEO of George Washington’s Mount Vernon, Washington learned fencing and dancing from the same instructor, which helped him become a skilled dancer.
Washington’s Love of Theater
Washington was also a fan of theater and attended plays whenever he could. He even had his soldiers perform a play called ‘Cato’ at Valley Forge, which was about a Roman senator opposing tyranny. This play was likely chosen to inspire the troops as they fought against the British Army.
Another interesting fact about Washington is that he was a scientific farmer who experimented with different types of plows, crop rotation, and soil boosters. He also bred American mules and American foxhounds, and his farm at Mount Vernon was a model for American agriculture.
After his term as president, Washington built one of the largest American whiskey distilleries of the 1700s at Mount Vernon. Although the distillery burned down six years after his death, it was rebuilt between 2005 and 2007, and visitors can now purchase whiskey from the distillery.
