Gen Z sees trades as faster route to $100K earnings than college

A recent national survey commissioned by Wolverine’s Project Bootstrap reveals a strong shift among Generation Z toward skilled‑trade careers. Two‑thirds of the 2,000 respondents ages 16‑28 said becoming a tradesperson is a quicker path to a $100,000 salary than pursuing a traditional four‑year college degree.

Why trades appeal to young Americans

Respondents highlighted three primary advantages of bypassing college: gaining hands‑on experience (37%), avoiding student debt (36%) and the ability to earn while learning (35%). Twenty‑three percent believe a trade career would let them purchase a home more quickly, and 58% say trades are becoming more appealing to people their age.

Perceived benefits and misconceptions

When asked about the broader benefits of skilled‑trade work, participants cited well‑paid jobs (29%), work‑life balance (20%) and flexibility (18%). Yet 31% admitted they had never considered a trade career, and 12% were unaware that trades often provide strong pay, flexibility and long‑term stability.

Outdated stereotypes persist: 28% think trade roles are physically demanding with little room for advancement, while 25% assume tradespeople work in dirty or messy environments. Despite these misconceptions, 73% view trade jobs as essential to society.

Financial expectations

When asked how much a typical skilled‑trade worker earns in a year, respondents estimated an average salary of $57,005.11. This perception aligns with the survey’s finding that 41% still believe a college degree is the only route to success, indicating a lingering belief in the traditional education model.

Influences and information sources

Family remains a key influence, with 37% of respondents getting career information from parents or relatives. Social media and teachers each account for 35% of the information flow, underscoring the role of both digital and school‑based guidance.

Encouragement appears to be growing: 51% say they have been urged to consider a skilled‑trade career, and 61% feel their schools provide adequate information about these pathways. Moreover, 76% find the idea of earning an income while learning through an apprenticeship very appealing, and 48% prefer a blended approach of practical and classroom instruction.

Interest among non‑trades participants

Among those not already in a trade role, a striking 71% expressed interest in trying a trade as a career. This enthusiasm suggests a potential pipeline of new entrants that could help address skilled‑labor shortages across the country.

Methodology

The survey was conducted by OnePoll.com on behalf of Wolverine Worldwide from June 8‑17, 2026. A total of 2,000 U.S. residents aged 16‑28 participated, providing a snapshot of current attitudes toward college versus trade pathways.

Implications for families and communities

For parents and community leaders, these findings highlight an opportunity to promote apprenticeship programs and trade‑school options as viable, financially sound alternatives to traditional college routes. Emphasizing the hands‑on experience, early earnings potential, and reduced debt burden can help families make informed decisions that align with both economic stability and personal growth.

As the labor market continues to evolve, the growing interest in skilled‑trade careers among Gen Z may reshape workforce development strategies, encouraging schools, businesses, and policymakers to invest more heavily in apprenticeship infrastructure and outreach.
